Its near side is covered in the dark \u201cmaria,\u201d ancient seas of basalt formed by immense impacts that cracked the crust and let lava flood out. The bright highlands, older and more heavily cratered, preserve the Solar System\u2019s earliest scars. Apollo 11 Landing Site \u2014 Mare Tranquillitatis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first human landing point (1969). Located on a basaltic plain formed 3.5 billion years ago, the region was chosen because the lava flows created a low-slope, low-boulder surface. The basalt here is rich in titanium, giving it a slightly bluish spectral signature. The landing site lies near the boundary of two major lava flow units, making it a valuable sampling area for understanding early lunar volcanism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Tycho Crater<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A young, energetic impact site (~108 million years old), easily recognized by its massive ray system that spans over 1,000 km. The crater\u2019s central peak is about 1.6 km high and exposes deep lunar crust material. Tycho\u2019s rays are among the Moon\u2019s brightest because the ejecta is still relatively fresh, unweathered by micrometeorite bombardment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Copernicus Crater<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A textbook example of a large, complex impact crater: terraced walls, a triple-peak central uplift, and an extensive ray system. Copernicus sits atop ancient mare basalts, and its impact excavated material from multiple depths. It\u2019s a major stratigraphic marker \u2014 the \u201cCopernican age\u201d names the youngest lunar geologic period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Aristarchus Crater &amp; Plateau<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Aristarchus is one of the brightest features on the Moon because it is exceptionally young (~450 million years) and the ejecta hasn\u2019t darkened. It sits on the Aristarchus Plateau, one of the Moon\u2019s most geologically diverse regions \u2014 pyroclastic deposits, volcanic rilles like Vallis Schr\u00f6teri, and suspected ancient lava tubes. This area is a high-priority site for future exploration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Mare Imbrium (Sea of Rains)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the largest impact basins in the Solar System (~1,100 km wide), later flooded with enormous volumes of basaltic lava. The Imbrium impact shaped much of the Moon\u2019s near-side crust \u2014 the Apennine, Caucasus, and Alps mountain ranges all formed by the basin\u2019s rim uplift. The basin\u2019s lava flows contain compositional gradients used to date lunar volcanism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Oceanus Procellarum (Ocean of Storms)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The only feature named \u201cOcean\u201d because of its vast, irregular shape. Unlike the round basins, Procellarum may not originate from a single impact \u2014 it might be tied to ancient thermal and tectonic stresses in the Moon\u2019s early crust. It hosts multiple historic landings (Luna 9, Surveyor 3, Chang\u2019e 5) and is chemically distinct from the eastern maria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Mare Serenitatis (Sea of Serenity)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A major mare basin with a striking compositional boundary visible even in small telescopes. Serenitatis shows high-titanium basalt flows on its eastern side and lower-titanium flows elsewhere. Its position shifts continuously due to orbit, libration, and phase, so imaging is referenced by date\/time and effective resolution rather than fixed sky coordinates.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mapping &amp; Constellations<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The Moon moves through different constellations over its 27.3-day orbit and is not tied to any one region.
